Once upon a time I dreamt I would …. We have all had those childhood dreams. Dreams we had as little children seemed to have endless possibilities. But where are we now in the fulfillment of those dreams? I’m not saying the magical dreams where we ride off on a flying horse, but the dreams of becoming an astronaut, ballerina, artist, you name it…Did you become who you aspired to be or did you just give up; were your dreams stifled by others, or did you feel the need to conform to a more societal accepted role? In comparing then and now, one must remember it’s never too late to chase our childhood dreams and make them real. If you’re living, you can dream, attain and aspire.
In this episode of Licensed to Live, Dr. Toni Liu describes how drawing was her passion growing up, even described by some as Picasso. Yet, raised in a strict family that upheld traditional Chinese culture she didn’t want to disobey her parents and instead pursued a professional career that her parents deemed more financially stable. She attended two medical residencies and found her niche in Family Medicine, but she never gave up on her childhood dream of being a cartoonist. She explained that drawing, “added color” to her life. Dr. Toni learned to use art to empower, educate and advocate for the missions she believes in – social justice, women’s rights, equality for all, etc. Dr. Toni brought her childhood dream to life and intertwined it with her career. In essence she learned to live true to herself and never gave up on her dream. How can we all get there?
