Resilience: Part 1

Resilience: Part 1 September 6, 2018

Some people think that resilience is all or nothing; either you have it or you don’t.  However, resilience is actually something that can be built over time and it’s based upon your life experience.  Resilience helps you to bounce back from adversity or difficulty. You can do a few things like make realistic plans, build your communication skills, try to regain some of that confidence that has been crushed during that moment in which you fell to your lowest point. These things  build you back up and make yourself become that top doctor again, and take you beyond that, beyond your wildest imagination.

I’ll give you four things that can help you build your resilience as you go forward.

  1.  Make some connections. We’re all on LinkedIn because we’re trying to make connections, maybe it’s for that next job, perhaps it’s for a sale or just to meet new people. Make connections and not only kind of virtual connections like you’re doing today but make real connections. Furthermore, make sure your family, friends, and your support system are there as well because they will carry you through sudden events such as a sudden job loss. That certainly helped me through when I lost my job suddenly in the past.
  2. Don’t make it seem like it’s the end of the world. Although, it could be the biggest event that has happened in your life, you must put it in perspective with everything that’s going on in this world.  A tragic loss, a job loss, or any a major life-changing event, can seem like the end of the world. However, you must not treat those events as such.  Continue to move forward saying, “Okay, this is now, that was the past. I must look toward a brighter future” and resilience is born.
  3. Keep things in perspective Think in terms of yourself within your community or even globally.  See yourself in the macrocosm of the world and not just focus on your immediate future. Even though it seems like a very difficult time, you build resilience by having a larger overall perspective by ridding yourself of that tunnel vision.
  4. Take action. There is no time like the present, it’s a new day, it’s a new time. It’s time for you to take action. Name one step you can take every single day that will move you forward, beyond that tragic moment. It’s something that you practice every day.  Sometimes, things are out of your control. You can’t control everything,  but you can take action. Take action today, take an action tomorrow and everyday.  Consistent action will move you forward step by step by step. Soon, you’ll turn around say “wow, I’ve come a long way.”

These four steps will help give you and build further resilience that will carry you to bounce back to be that great professional you are, that great parent you are, and that great person that you are. Thank you for your time, we’ll talk more about this in the future.
